Ubuntu desktop 8.10 installation screenshots taken on every steps during the installation process. These screenshots should be a useful guide for a beginner or anyone who's planning to do Ubuntu installation for the time.
This is the first screen you'll see when you boot the installation cd. You can select what language you prefer to use for the Ubuntu installation.

The first menu, Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer means what is says. You can try Ubuntu without installing it in your hard disk. In other words, this is the live cd Ubuntu. If you never use Ubuntu before, then choose this menu and try Ubuntu how long you like. You can check official software packages included, try running programs, etc.
The second menu, Install Ubuntu is what we are going to do, install Ubuntu in the hard disk. Don't click this menu yet. You should check next menu first.
The third menu, Check CD for defects is Ubuntu tool for checking your Ubuntu installer for defects. This is a very useful tool and you should check your cd before proceed to second menu especially if you download the iso and burned the image yourself.
The fourth menu, Test memory is a Ubuntu tool to check your system memory. A Ubuntu tool the same as third menu, but it checks the system memory.
The final menu, Boot from first hard disk is Ubuntu boot maintenance tool. You don't need to use this menu right now. But remember this tool if you have problem booting into your Windows or Ubuntu if you made a dual boot installation. Normally happen if you screw up the boot manager or when you choose the wrong mount point during the installation process. Use this menu to boot the first hard disk, usually Windows operating system.
Select Ubuntu desktop installation language. The language will be the default language in the final system. There is a release notes regarding an Internet connection problem. Make sure you read it if it's concern you.
Select a city in your country and a time zone. Don't worry if the time zone is incorrect, you can adjust it later when your system is up and running.
Ubuntu desktop select keyboard layout. Choose a layout which is very similar to your keyboard. There is a text box that you can use to test your keyboard if you are using a non US keybord.
Prepare disk space for your Ubuntu desktop. If you have Windows operating system in your hard disk, you will see the partition here. Depends on your planning, choose a space you dedicate for Ubuntu, whether it's a partition or the whole hard disk.
If you have the whole hard disk for Ubuntu, then choose the Guided - use entire disk option. Choose Manual instead if you want to manually partition the disk.

Who are you? You have to answer that question in this step, setup account for Ubuntu desktop system. Type your full name, account name to be used as login, and your account password. Remember to type the same password twice. Write down the account login name and password if you want. You can change the name for your system if you don't like it.
The next step would be different if you have Windows in your system. You'll have an option to copy some windows files in Windows Documents and Settings. However you will be seeing a system setup summary if don't have Windows in your system.
Ubuntu desktop installation setup summary. This is your last chance to go back to previous step and change your setting. If you satisfied with your installation setup, then let's install Ubuntu now by clicking the Install button.
Set Ubuntu desktop boot loader location. The boot loader location is pre-selected. You can change the location if you want. Choose which partition you want the boot loader to reside and continue.

You will be taken to this screen after Ubuntu successfully rebooted. This is Ubuntu desktop login screen. If you have an experience with other operating system before, you knew that this is the operating system main gate. There is a text box for a username. You can also see Options menu at the bottom left and computer name, date and time at the bottom right.
Enter your login name to login into Ubuntu desktop. There is no Password or Login button to click. Just press Enter after you key in your login name (username). You'll be taking to the next screen where you can enter your Ubuntu account's password.
