How to build and install wxGTK package for Slackware Linux

wxGTK is a port of wxWidgets using the GTK+ library, the one that you need if you plan to install an open source cross-platform GUI library in Linux operating system. Slackware doesn't include wxGTK in its official releases. You have to build the package yourself if you need it in your system. Here is a guide on how to build wxGTK for Slackware Linux and install the package.

Build wxGTK package for Slackware Linux

To build wxGTK package for Slackware Linux, you need to:

  1. Get Slackbuilds script file for wxGTK from website.

  2. Download wxGTK source from wxWidgets website.

Change directory to your work area directory or anywhere that you prefer:

[email protected]:~# cd /home/slackware/source/myslackware/

Extract wxGTK slackbuilds script file, the wxGTK.tar.gz in your work area. See an example below:

[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware# tar zxvf /home/luzar/work-area/wxGTK.tar.gz

Change directory to the extracted wxGTK slackbuild's script file. Copy wxGTK source, 'wxGTK-2.8.9.tar.gz' into the directory. See the example command in step by step below:

[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware# cd wxGTK/
[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware/wxGTK# cp /home/luzar/work-area/wxGTK-2.8.9.tar.gz .

Run wxGTK.SlackBuild script to make Slackware wxGTK package. See the example below:

[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware/chmlib# ./wxGTK.SlackBuild

It takes a moment before the build process is finish. Here is an example when the package is complete:

Gzipping wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tar...

Renaming wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tar.gz to wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tgz...

Moving wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tgz to /tmp...

Package creation complete.

[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware/wxGTK#

Now you can change directory to the /tmp directory because it's where you can find the complete build Slackware wxGTK package. To install the new Slackware WXgtk package, run installpkg wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tgz command. See the steps example below:

[email protected]:/home/slackware/source/myslackware/wxGTK# cd /tmp/
[email protected]:/tmp# installpkg wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo.tgz

Save a copy of Slackware wxGTK package as a backup:

[email protected]:/tmp# cp wxGTK-2.8.9-i486-2_SBo /home/slackware/packages/
